Lake Maggiore
F.A.Q.

Welcome to the FAQ section dedicated to the NaviTap service on Lake Maggiore.
Here you’ll find detailed answers to the most frequently asked questions about how the new NaviTap contactless system works a solution designed to make ticket payments easier and enhance your travel experience on board.

With the exception of historic ships (P/fo Piemonte), all NLM ships are equipped with contactless readers enabled for NAVITAP payment.

The system calculates the fare for the route taken only if you swipe the card on the contactless validator both when boarding and disembarking from the ships. If this is not done, the system recognizes where you boarded but not where you got off or vice versa. Therefore it applies the maximum fare that corresponds to the daily ticket of the entire network of the Italian basin.

If you never get close the card when you travel on ships and you have not purchased another ticket at the ticket offices on land or online, you are travelling without a ticket and, according to the General Conditions of Transport, you are subject to penalty and the payment of a standard fare ticket calculated by the departure station of the trip. In addition to the price of the ticket, the passenger will be subject to the payment of a surcharge of the same amount and the payment of the collection fee on board.

The system is unable to understand that the trip is made by the same person and therefore, in addition to not being able to calculate the correct fare, it will charge as many daily Italian basin network tickets as the number of cards or devices identified by the system. Therefore, you always must use the same device during the trip: the same physical card, the same digital card, the same phone or the same watch.

Check the color of the light signal on the reader: if it’s red, it could be a failure, so try with another validator (there are at least two on each ship) if all the validators do not work, report it to the on-board staff who will give you the necessary instructions to regularize your trip.

No, it is not necessary, but we suggest you to make the registration on the Navigazione Laghi website at https://navitap.navigazionelaghi.it/ and save your card. From your personal area you can check your trips and related charges.

Yes, each card (or device) allows a maximum of five people to travel at a time. Remember that for it to work correctly, you have to do as many taps as the people enable on the same card. TAPS must be done within sixty seconds from the first and on the same validator (the display shows the number of passengers registered). All members of the group must travel with the card holder.

The multi-passenger system works correctly if all TAPs are made on the same validator. If they are divided on multiple validation devices, it may happen that the TAPs made on the second validator are interpreted incorrectly, charging some travelers the maximum fare and others not charging any ticket. If you realize you have made a mistake, inform the on-board staff immediately.

If a validator doesn’t work, try using the other. All ships (except for historic ones) are equipped with at least two contactless validators. If both validators don’t work, you must contact the on-board staff and explain the situation: if it’s your first boarding of the day, they will regularize your trip by issuing a physical ticket without extra charge; if it’s not your first boarding, they will take note of the card or device used and the route taken to regularize your trip if necessary at a later time (refer to the notes for refunds).

No, you only pay the daily rate for the trip.

The contactless system verifies the boarding and disembarkation points by identifying the fare of the journey and applying the corresponding daily fare based on the route travelled. The maximum rate of free circulation fare for the entire Italian basin network is €28.60. The ticket issued is a free circulation travel document and therefore allows you to travel all day without time limits.

No, there are no fare reductions with the NAVITAP system. If you are entitled to fare reductions, you must go to the ticket offices to buy the corresponding ticket.

In your personal area on the traveler portal https://navitap.navigazionelaghi.it/ You can also get all the information about your charges by reading the reason next to the cost. Alternatively, you can see the charges on your credit card statement, recognizable by the reason for the movement “Navlaghi ID….”.

No, there are no fines, fees or extra costs. All amounts charged correspond to the value of the travel tickets.

The amount charged is the amount that the system applies when it cannot establish the exact route you took on your trip, it corresponds to the value of the daily ticket for the entire Italian basin network.

If you used the card or a device at the beginning of the trip but not at the end, in this case the system cannot determine the exact route of the trip, so it applies the maximum daily rate of the Italian basin.

It is most likely the cost of a trip, even taken several days before. If the bank transaction is not successful at the time of the trip, the system tries several times over several days to recover the amount due. If you would like more information, contact the Navimaggiore Operations Management to verify your charges.

This is a pre-authorization required by the banking circuit and independent of our system. Depending on the banking circuit, the amount varies between 0.01 euros and 10.00 euros. The circuit then charges the correct rate through operations under its control (cancellation, repeal …)

The cases could be the following: the card does not belong to one of the enabled circuits; the card is insolvent (the current account does not have sufficient balance, is blocked or other reasons); the card has expired; the card belongs to one of the enabled circuits but is not contactless. In these cases, we suggest you contact your bank which can identify the cause of the problem.

Yes, the system works with all devices where a card belonging to the enabled circuits has been digitized. ATTENTION: physical card and digitized card are not interchangeable during the trip. You must always use the same device (referring to the same card) if you want to have the correct fare and not risk paying for a double ticket.

No, it is not possible.

By registering the physical card associated with the virtual one, you can also view the transactions made with the virtual version.

You must show the card or device you used to TAP on the reader.

The controllers’ handhelds maintain the anonymity of the card data and its holders. Navigazione Laghi does not store the data indicated in any way.

No, our readers are POS certified by the banks that enable their cards. Our system meets the security standards required for any contactless payment operation.

When proven failures in the readers prevent your card from being validated correctly at each boarding and disembarking.

You must send an email to infomaggiore@navigazionelaghi.it, requesting a verification of your trip and the related payment. It is necessary to communicate the last four digits of the credit card used (physical or virtual), the date of the trip and any other information that you consider useful to reconstruct your itinerary. We recommend that you keep all your travel documents: Navigazione Laghi does not keep contactless card data.

No, the bank card (physical or virtual) used for the trip must be registered to person requesting the refund.

Navigazione Laghi, once the necessary checks have been completed, will reply to your email informing you whether your request has been accepted or not

By crediting the amount due to the same bank card. Alternatively, by bank transfer or by free tickets to be used for subsequent trips.
